GOVERNMENT has scrapped O-level mathematics as a prerequisite for one to qualify to train as a registered general nurse (RGN) or primary care nurse (PCN)
In the past, it was a requirement for nursing applicants to possess at least five O-level subjects including English, Mathematics and any Science subject, with at least a grade C or better.
The Ministry of Health and Child Health Care has since flighted an advertisement, inviting applicants wishing to train as RGN and PCN for May 2024 to apply, and the deadline is April 21.
According to the advert, applicants are required to have “a minimum of five O’ Level subjects with passes in English Language and a science subject and three others (excluding practical subjects, which are fashion and fabrics, metal work, graphic art, and woodwork) at Grade C or better, obtained at not more than two sittings, with full certificates as examination result slips are not accepted”.

Applicants should not be younger than 17 years or older than 30 years by May 13, 2024.
Applications should be sent to the nearest General Nurse Training School and addressed to, either the Principal Tutor of a Central Hospital and Senior Tutor in Charge of a District Mission or Provincial Hospital General Nurse Training School.
“For the short-listed candidates, the following should be presented at the interview: original and certified copies of birth certificate, national identity card, O-level certificates, marriage certificate where applicable, A-level certificate if attained, and two passport-size pictures with the applicant’s name at the back,” read the applicant
The ministry said manual verification of the academic and identification certificates will be done on the day of the interviews.
“Only candidates who meet the recruitment criteria will be short-listed for interviews. The interviews will be conducted at the nearest General Nurse Training School where a candidate has applied. Successful candidates will be deployed to schools where training posts exist throughout the country,” said the ministry.
