Government restructures Deeds, Companies and IP department

GOVERNMENT has merged the Deeds, Companies, and Intellectual Property sections under one authority as part of a restructuring intervention meant to enhance cost-effectiveness in public administration.

Under this drive, the Government has created a new corporate body called the Companies and Intellectual Property Office that will be headed by one chief registrar.

The Cabinet on Tuesday considered and approved the variation to the principles on the establishment of the Deeds, Companies, and Intellectual Property Authority as a semi-autonomous entity.

The acting Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere, said the above proposal was presented by the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Ziyambi Ziyambi.

“The nation is being informed that in October 2022 Cabinet approved principles that sought to separate the Companies and Intellectual Property sections from the Department of Deeds, Companies and Intellectual Property by creating a body corporate termed the Companies and Intellectual Property Office headed by a chief registrar,” said the minister in a post-Cabinet media briefing.

“The variation seeks to merge the three sections and have one chief registrar in charge of the Deeds, Companies, and Intellectual Property sections, respectively.

“This will be cost-effective to the Treasury and strategically efficient to keep the offices together and restructure the whole department into a single authority.”
