GOVERNMENT has rolled out the Zimbabwe Livestock Mitigation Strategy to protect the national herd and safeguard farmers’ livelihoods amid forecasts of an El Niño-induced drought in the 2026-2027 rainfall season.
The strategy comes as the country prepares for potentially reduced rainfall, which could affect grazing, water availability and livestock feed supplies.
Under the strategy, the Government will assess cattle considered to be at risk and monitor the availability of grazing land, water, feed and fodder to ensure timely interventions.
Writing on his microblogging platform, X, Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development Permanent Secretary Professor Obert Jiri said the programme will also focus on disease prevention and vaccination, while accelerating the development of Water Drought Mitigation Centres to improve access to water for livestock during dry periods.
“With El Niño forecasted this summer, the Government has put in place the Zimbabwe Livestock Mitigation Strategy,” he said.
“The strategy focuses on assessing cattle at risk, grazing and water availability, feed and fodder requirements, disease prevention and vaccination, while accelerating the development of Water Drought Mitigation Centres.
“By preparing now, we safeguard our herds, protect farmers’ livelihoods and ensure Food security for the nation.”
The strategy is expected to help farmers prepare for the anticipated dry conditions by identifying vulnerable livestock early and putting measures in place to reduce drought-related losses.
Livestock remains a key component of Zimbabwe’s agricultural economy, providing income, food and livelihoods to thousands of households, particularly in rural communities.
The proactive measures are therefore aimed at strengthening the resilience of the livestock sector and ensuring that drought does not undermine national food security gains.
