Government has dispatched 2 000 tonnes of grain to flood-hit Malawi and Mozambique after President Mnangagwa authorised the release of food from Zimbabwe’s strategic grain reserves.
Inspecting the loading of trucks at the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) Aspindale depot this afternoon, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Permanent Secretary, Professor Obert Jiri, said the move reflects Zimbabwe’s readiness to assist affected neighbours.
“His Excellency the President authorised that we dispatch and assist the people in Malawi and Mozambique with 1 000 tonnes of grain each,” he said.
Prof Jiri said the country remains food secure, noting that strategic grain stocks currently stand at 187 284 tonnes, meaning the assistance will not compromise domestic supply.
Civil Protection Department chief director, Mr Nathan Nkomo, said the Government is using Grain Marketing Board lorries to transport the grain.
“We are using our in-house capacity and only providing fuel for the trucks going to Malawi and Mozambique,” he said.
The humanitarian relief follows flash floods that displaced thousands of families in the two countries.
