THE Government of Zimbabwe is set to confer national honours on three outstanding individuals whose extraordinary contributions span diplomacy, heroism and human capital development, in a ceremony that will coincide with this year’s National Heroes Day commemorations.

Topping the honours list is Professor Vladimir Gennadyevich Shubin, a long-time friend of Zimbabwe and former Secretary of the Soviet Afro-Asian Solidarity Committee.

He also served as Head of the Africa Section of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union’s International Department.

In recognition of his enduring solidarity with Zimbabwe during its liberation struggle and beyond, Prof Shubin will receive the Zimbabwe International Friendship Award.

Also to be honoured is Inasem Chitutu, a teenager from Bindura, who risked his life to rescue two children trapped in a burning house.

His courage and selflessness have earned him the Silver Cross of Zimbabwe, one of the country’s highest civilian bravery awards.

Completing the trio is Dr Madeline Nyamwanza, Zimbabwe’s first female African medical doctor.

A trailblazer in medicine and education, Dr Nyamwanza will receive the Robert Gabriel Mugabe Commendation Award for Service in Human Capital Development, in recognition of her pioneering role and decades of service in shaping the nation’s health and education sectors.

The awards will be presented during the Heroes Day commemorations at the National Heroes Acre in Harare on August 11, where the nation will pay tribute to both fallen and living heroes.
