adminGovernment will not privatise Zesa Holdings to place the power utility in private hands as envisaged by the Electricity Amendment Act passed by Parliament. Speaking at the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority power sector symposium in Harare yesterday, Energy and Power Development Deputy Minister Engineer Munacho Mutezo said Government would not pursue the unbundling of the power utility.
“The only step we are not taking further (on Zesa) is the privatisation,” said Eng Mutezo.
“Government will continue to be a player. We think there is a lot of room for private players and that is why we are pushing for the participation of independent power producers.
“But the idea is that there should be a core player which is owned and operated by the Government.”
Eng Mutezo said Government was working on boosting electricity generating capacity through rehabilitation of existing power infrastructure and existing power plants.
“We implore the private sector to come on board to also invest in this lucrative sector,” said Eng Mutezo.
