Governor Mathema lauds university sports

The challenge was made by the Bulawayo Metropolitan Governor Cain Mathema when he officially opened the Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association Games at the National University of Science and Technology yesterday.

“It is my sincere hope that these Games are a first step towards the building of a formidable Zusa team to compete against teams from teachers’ and technical colleges. It is my hope that the team to represent Zimbabwe at the CUSCA Games will be dominated by athletes from universities,” he said.

Governor Mathema praised the growth of the Zusa games since their inauguration in October 1999 at the University of Zimbabwe where only four universities competed.

Today in its 13th edition the Games have attracted 11 universities.

All universities were introduced at the opening ceremony and they announced their intentions with boisterous war cries meant to intimidate opponents.

Women’s University in Africa, University of Zimbabwe, Midlands State University, Lupane, Harare Institute of Technology, Great Zimbabwe, Chinhoyi, Bindura, Catholic University, Africa University and the hosts Nust will compete in the 12 disciplines..

Meanwhile, Econet Buddie brand manager for Zimbabwe Maureen Chirambaguhwa said her company was committed to continue sponsoring Zusa.

“We started sponsoring the Zusa games this year and we had a one-year contract but we are happy with all the proceedings we have seen thus far and we hope to extend our sponsorship,” she said.

The games end tomorrow.

The games are being held at different venues that inclue Raylton, Crescent, Bulawayo Athletics Club, Hartsfield, Bulawayo Club for the Disabled Courts and Nust.
