Government, through the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, has donated an assortment of goods worth thousands of dollars to villagers in Maramba-Pfungwe, who were affected by a hailstorm recently.
The assortment included 30 tonnes of maize, 10 bales each of clothes and shoes, among others. A six-year-old girl was killed during the hailstorm which affected more than 600 households.
The goods were handed over by Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Dr Sekai Nzenza, who assured the community that Government would assist the affected families with food aid and relevant essentials.
“I am here today to handover this assortment to the affected families, the goods may not be enough, but let me assure you that the Government will not rest until every affected family is assisted,” she said
Dr Nzenza appealed to other organisations to extend a helping hand to the affected families.
“As the ministry, we appeal to private organisations to intervene and join hands with the Government in assisting the affected,” she said.
“Soon, I will meet with the United Nations resident coordinator to map a way forward on how to respond to situations of this nature.”
National Assembly member for Maramba-Pfungwe Cde Tichaona Karumazondo commended the gesture from Government and said the relief would go a long way in mitigating the plight of the affected families.
“This gesture is commendable. It shows that Government has its people at heart,” he said.
Cde Karumazondo appealed to Government to continue assisting the Maramba-Pfungwe community, saying besides the hailstorm which left families homeless, the area was always affected by drought.
“We appreciate the assistance from the Government, we are also appealing to the Government to continuously render assistance to Maramba-Pfungwe,” he said.
“This area is always affected by drought, and we also appeal to individuals and other organisations to assist this community.
“Most of these families are surviving with one meal a day, that is if they can even afford it, these heavy rains came as a surprise to this community because they had never experienced it.”
Turning to the constituency, Cde Karumazondo assured the people that he would work tirelessly to bring development to Maramba-Pfungwe constituency.
“As your representative, I will not rest until this constituency is transformed,” he said.
“I am aware of developmental needs in this constituency and I will make sure they are addressed.”
