A healthy and productive workforce is the basis upon which modernisation and industrialisation of an economy can be anchored, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland East Dr Aplonia Munzverengwi said yesterday during the commissioning of staff buses for Marondera Provincial Hospital and Hwedza District Hospital.
The buses were bought by Government as part of efforts to improve the welfare of health workers.
Speaking at the ceremony in Marondera, she said: “Today is a great day for the Ministry of Health and Child Care as we are gathered here to witness the move by the Government to ease transport challenges for staff members as well as boost staff morale.
“As a Government, our commitment to the development of the health sector is steadfast and deserves appreciation by all stakeholders. Today, I am humbled to be a part of this significant milestone in the healthcare infrastructure of our beloved region. The provision of reliable transport services for our healthcare professionals is a critical component of ensuring efficient and effective healthcare delivery.
“This gesture by the Government demonstrated its unwavering commitment to improve the health sector, which plays a key role in the attainment of an upper middle-income economy by 2030. President Mnangagwa is doing well, he is open to everyone, and every sector, be it private or public, with a desire to add value to the socio-economic development of this great nation.
“These buses have come at an appropriate time when our province is at an infant stage of establishing effective transport for our health staff to ensure that the people from the two districts have access to happy health personnel.
“What we are witnessing today marks and symbolises the collective efforts and dedication of numerous individuals and organisations who have come together to support our healthcare system,” she said.
She said the provision of buses was a result of the affirmation of the Second Republic’s pro-people and listening leadership, which is seized with improving the mobility of health workers and timely health care delivery to communities in line with the vision of health for all by 2025 policy.
“Remember that you are the backbone of our healthcare system, and your tireless efforts and selfless dedication are an inspiration to us all. Hence, these buses are a token of our appreciation for the invaluable work you do each day, often in challenging circumstances.
“The Government has fulfilled its promise to avail buses to public hospitals as a means to ease transport challenges for its workers. Tinoti mapihwa chitsvambe ana mukoti, pasara pava penyu apa, chero nguva ipi zvayo muchabatsirika pakuenda kudzimba nekudzoswa kumabasa kunyanya vaya vanenge vachishanda nousiku.”
Mashonaland East provincial medical director Dr Paul Matsvimbo thanked Government for the buses.
“This is part of Government’s efforts to improve working conditions for health workers. Government is also building houses so that health workers can have accommodation. Also, we are being provided with equipment, especially in our theatres. These are tools of trade for the job to be carried out easily.
“This year, the President appointed a Health Service Commission which will look into the welfare of health workers. So the Government is always committed to seeing health workers’ welfare improved,” he said.
