Govt donates fire tender to council

Masvingo Mayor Alderman Femius Chakabuda confirmed the donation and said it would go a long way in improving the handling of fire incidents in the city.

The council’s fire fighting department has been found wanting whenever fire breaks out and in most cases residents have lost their property because the council would not be having enough equipment or the only vehicle they had, would not be in good condition.

Last month one family from Target Kopje suburb lost property worth thousands of dollars when fire gutted its house.

The fire brigade failed to put out the fire because they did not have adequate equipment.

“We are elated that at least we have got another vehicle. This will make life easier for the council as our fire department had only one truck working. In actual fact, we had one old truck working and the other one was already grounded. The donation of a vehicle by the Government will go a long way in easing our plight as we had serious challenges in attending to accidents and infernos,” said Ald Chakabuda.

“We have been operating under difficult situations where we had to attend to all scenes of accidents with a depleted fire tender fleet. Our jurisdiction goes as far as Bubi along Masvingo-Beitbridge Road and Mvuma as well as Birchenough Bridge along Masvingo-Mutare Road.

“So you can imagine how we are expected to attend accidents that happen along all these roads with only one old fire tender. The new fire tender will definitely ease pressure on our fire fighting team.        We are happy with the Government’s gesture,” he said.
