The Government has officially launched the Presidential Stands for Veterans of the Liberation Struggle, a landmark initiative aimed at honouring the war stalwarts through the allocation of residential land.
The programme seeks to provide secure and dignified housing to war veterans who played a critical role in securing the nation’s independence.
Prevail Group International will develop the stands, starting with 50 000, and will provide all the necessary services.
The launch ceremony was presided over by key Government officials, including Minister of Local Government and Public Works Daniel Garwe, Minister of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs Monica Mavhunga, and partner Prevail Group International, led by Special Presidential Investment Adviser Dr Paul Tungwarara.
The Presidential Stands Programme forms part of a broader national strategy to uplift historically marginalised groups and ensure inclusive development anchored on respect, equity and justice.
Speaking at the signing ceremony in Harare yesterday, Minister Garwe said the programme reflected the Government’s deep appreciation of the sacrifices made by liberation war heroes.
“Our Constitution provides for the accord of honour, respect and economic empowerment for our veterans,” he said.
“As such, the Second Republic has, from its inception, put this into practice by appointing the Ministry of War Veterans. So, the Second Republic is concerned about the welfare of the veterans.”
Minister Mavhunga stated that 20 percent of the country’s resources, such as mining, housing and farms, are allocated as a quota for all veterans.
The Minister of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs expressed her joy that the Ministry of Local Government and Prevail Group of Companies were fulfilling the requirements of the statutes of the country.
“Firstly, let me thank our President for taking care of the welfare of the veterans, our Minister of Local Government and Prevail Group of Companies for this project that is going to benefit our comrades. We are going to do this transparently, and we promise everyone in this country that we will not be found on the side of those who are corrupt,” she said.
Dr Tungwarara said it was an honour to be part of the project.
“We are very happy to be part of this initiative. We are ready to start the work so that the war veterans can also benefit,” he said.
The stands are expected to include access to roads, water, electricity, and other essential services, with the Government pledging to work closely with local authorities to fast-track development.
