Govt mourns Mauritian businessman

Government has mourned the death of a Mauritian businessman Mr Ahkin Ipkwok Sheung, who helped in the establishment of relations between Harare and Port-Louis. Mr Sheung died in Mauritius on Sunday. Chief of Protocol, Ambassador Munyaradzi Kajese, confirmed the death. He described Mr Sheung as a friend of Zimbabwe who helped several local business people who visited Mauritius.

“He was a friend of Zimbabwe and was an agent of Air Zimbabwe,” said Ambassador Kajese. “He helped several business people and he visited Zimbabwe on many occasions and made donations to various institutions.”

Ambassador Kajese said Mr Sheung at one point acted as Zimbabwe’s Honorary Consular in Mauritius. Mr Sheung’s long time friend Mr Leonard Nyamutsamba, who is also the managing director of Lens Agencies, said his death was not only a loss to him, but the entire business fraternity in Zimbabwe.

He said Mr Sheung assisted business people, especially women who went to sell their hand crafts in Mauritius. “I met him in Mauritius in the 1980s when I was the chairman of the Export and Import Association and established relations with him,” he said. “Since then he assisted several business people visiting Mauritius with accommodation and transport for free.

“Mr Sheung was also an agent for Air Zimbabwe until it stopped flights to Mauritius. At times he assisted the national airline with fuel for free when Air Zimbabwe was facing challenges. As such, as a country we have lost a true friend of Zimbabwe who loved local business people.”
