Government has confiscated over 30 000 carats of diamonds and 30kg of gold from people unauthorised to possess the precious stones and metal. According to the Government Gazette published on Friday, the gold was confiscated from more than 1 700 illegal dealers and the diamonds from 800 people.

The seizures were done in terms of the Gold Trade Act and the Precious Stones Act, which both allow the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development to take custody of all gold and diamonds declared by any court to be forfeited to the State if deemed to be in the possession of unauthorised persons.

The notice said those with legal rights to the gold or diamonds should approach the ministry.

“If no such person establishes a legal right to any of this gold within the afore-mentioned period, it may be disposed of by the Secretary for Mines and Mining Development,” reads part of the notice.
