Memory Chinguwa in Mutare
Zimbabwe is committed to observing human rights and will engage organisations to come up with a concrete plan to kick-start operations of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission, a Cabinet minister has said.
Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa said the Government was willing to give teeth to the ZHRC by providing adequate funding. He was addressing participants at a human rights workshop in Mutare during the belated World Human Rights Day commemorations.
“It is our sincere hope that with this Government, the fortunes of the commission will change.
“As you know, the Government is supposed to cater for 70 percent of the commission’s operational costs and the remaining 30 percent is expected to come from the donor community,” he said in a speech read on his behalf by the Deputy Minister of Justice, Legal,and Parliamentary Affairs, Cde Fortune Chasi.
“Government would want to see the commission being functional and there is no other entity as committed as Government in partnering with the commission.
“More funding by Government will yield us results and the ministry will ensure that the commission is availed with funds to be operational.”
Speaking on the sidelines of the workshop, Zimbabwe Human Rights Forum chairman Mr Abel Chikomo said civic society welcomed Government’s commitment to dialogue.
