SPORTS Minister Anselem Sanyatwe says the Government will support all the four professional golfers who were seriously injured in a tragic car crash, which claimed the life of their fellow golfer, in Harare on Sunday.
The five golfers, including a Malawian and Ghanaian golfer, were travelling in the same car when the accident happened.
They were coming from the FBC Zimbabwe Open, which had ended a few hours earlier at Royal Harare Golf Club. The accident claimed the life of Zvishavane-based professional golfer Morton Kombai.
Tonderai Masunga and Biggie Chibvuri, who was driving the vehicle, were the two Zimbabweans who were injured in the same accident.
Malawian Victor Kachepatsonga and Ghanaian Lucky Ayisa are admitted at Kensington Medical Clinic in Harare.
Speaking after his hospital visit, Min Sanyatwe said the Government remains committed to supporting the injured players.
“We are here at Kensington Medical Clinic where Lucky from Ghana and Victor from Malawi are admitted. They are recovering well and responding positively to treatment.
“I want to thank the doctor for the close attention being given.
“As Government, we are deeply concerned but be rest assured we will continue to support them in every way we can.”
The Minister commended Zimbabwe’s golfing community for rallying behind the injured players.
“I’m reliably informed that the entire golf community, including our partners, have been very supportive. That’s commendable.”
He confirmed that both the Malawian and Ghanaian embassies had been informed of the incident and communication had been established with the players’ families.
“I’m happy that their next of kin have been contacted, along with the respective embassies. We are working closely with them and we’re hopeful the players will be discharged and return home soon.”
Min Sanyatwe was accompanied by his deputy, Emily Jesaya, and Sports and Recreation Commission director-general Eltah Nengomasha.
