THE Government has promised to take action to improve the dire living conditions in Mbare to prevent the spread of cholera.
The residents of Annex Flats and New Lines are particularly at risk, with their congested living conditions, frequent sewer bursts, lack of clean water, uncollected garbage and blocked toilets.
National Housing and Social Amenities Minister, Daniel Garwe, said the Government is implementing strategies to improve the area and ensure that no one is left behind.
Industry and Commerce Minister, Sekai Nzenza, urged residents to maintain cleanliness to prevent the spread of cholera.
Annex Flats and New Lines residents are sitting on a ticking health time bomb as cholera infections continue to rise in Harare.
Speaking during a tour of the area yesterday, Minister Garwe said they were concerned by Mbare residents’ living conditions.
“We have tried to talk to the city council, but they are not willing to take action.
“We have, therefore, decided to step in because residents are suffering. The Government is implementing strategies to complement the President’s vision of leaving no place and no one behind,” said Minister Garwe.
Minister Nzenza said she had approached the relevant authorities and they would work towards ensuring solutions are provided.
The Annex Flats and New Lines problem dates back to 1980.
Perennial sewer bursts, lack of clean water, uncollected garbage and a generally dirty environment, are the hallmarks of the area.
“We pay rates for services which we never get. We are just surviving by God’s grace because this place is filthy.
“What pains me most is that Council officials are living in clean and safe areas while we are exposed to these dumpsite conditions as you are seeing,” said one resident.
