GOVERNMENT has set in motion plans to establish modern maintenance camps along all major road projects, while in some
instances, old camps will be rehabilitated, Transport and Infrastructural Development Permanent Secretary Engineer Joy
Makumbe has said.
She was speaking at the commissioning of a model maintenance camp in Beitbridge.
The camp was built by the Zimborders Consortium 4km north of Beitbridge town as part of the US$300 million out-of-port
projects.
“We are building good roads nationwide and these would need maintenance for them to last longer,” said Eng Makumbe
“So with that spirit, we have built this model facility, which will have roads maintenance teams stationed here to ensure the
roads infrastructure is serviced and maintained.
“We had a shortcoming of this before and now we have taken bold steps to fix the deficiency. We are going to invest in such
strategic facilities nationally. This camp is located along the rebuilt Beitbridge to Masvingo Highway”.
Zimborders Consortium General Manager Mr Nqobile Ncube said the camp had seven houses, four guest houses for visiting
roads engineers, a workshop and an administration block.
Among other out-of-port projects under the border modernisation, the organisation, in partnership with the Government, built
220 houses for border agencies, a 11, 4 mega litres water reservoir, an animal, plant and quarantine centre, a new fire station
and a new sewer oxidation dam.
