Government should value the welfare of war veterans by making sure school fees for their children is paid timeously, a senior official has said. Addressing a Press conference in the capital on Monday, Welfare Services for the War Veterans, War Collaborators, Former Political Detainees and Restrictees permanent secretary Brigadier-General (Retired) Asher Tapfumaneyi said access to education for war veterans’ children was not a question for debate.
Rtd Brig-Gen Tapfumaneyi was briefing the media on the strategic planning workshop for his ministry which was conducted recently.
“Government and Zanu-PF should be attentive to the inalienability of the rights and entitlements of veterans of the liberation struggle to recognition, respect, welfare benefits and economic empowerment as entrenched in the constitution of Zimbabwe,” he said.
“We need to stress that these are issues of law and not about capacity and that they should be taken seriously.”
Rtd Brig-Gen Tapfumaneyi said not much has been done to cushion the widows of war veterans from the economic hardships, adding that they have to be catered for in indigenisation policies.
Rtd Brig-Gen Tapfumaneyi said it was time to solve predicaments and gaps in policies concerning war veterans as they now have a fully-fledged ministry.
He said because of the delayed payment of school fees, $3 million has been released for this school term instead of the required $6,4 million.
Rtd Brig-Gen Tapfumaneyi said war veterans should be given access to mining concessions which would make them entrepreneurs.
