Grandfather’s wise words

Natalie Dudzai

GRANDFATHER would always tell us, “Kura uone, muzukuru.”

We turned a deaf ear, thinking it was just another cliché.

Unbeknown to us, he was offering a lifetime’s wisdom in a single hint.

When reality finally set in, those words began to ring like a tolling bell.

Throughout our childhood, we were tucked safely beneath the feathers of our mother.

Through our teenage years, our father guided our every step.

But when the time came to leave the shell, reality rushed in like a cold breeze, freezing every fibre of our stubborn, youthful bones.

Now, his voice returns as clearly as dawn after a long night.

We have grown and finally we see: The path he charted in his quiet words was       the map we needed for this outside  world.
