A 75-YEAR-OLD Avondale man has landed himself in jail after a shameful attack on his 73 year old wife despite a protection order that was meant to keep her safe from his violent temper.
The elderly offender was convicted by the Harare Magistrates Court for violating a protection order granted on 28 August 2025. The order clearly barred him from “insulting, assaulting and threatening her” yet he ignored it with stunning disregard.
According to a statement from the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), on 16 November 2025 at around 9PM the old man launched into “an unprovoked rant” and began shouting at his wife, accusing her of being a witch. Their 42 year old son tried to intervene but the grandpa was so worked up that “the offender could not be restrained.”
In a disgraceful act that has shocked many considering his age, the elderly man “assaulted the victim with fists,” leaving the family traumatised.
He was sentenced to 30 days imprisonment and a previously suspended 90 day term was activated, meaning he will serve an effective 120 days behind bars.
