Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the incident adding that the man was in custody waiting to appear in court.
“I can confirm that we have arrested an 81-year-old man who was caught raping his 11-year-old granddaughter. The matter was reported to the police who acted to arrest the grandpa,” he said. The incident occurred on Saturday at around 4pm when the girl’s grandmother left her in the care of her grandfather. She decided to take a bath and when she finished she went into the bedroom with intention to change her clothes.
The girl found her grandfather in the bedroom and before she could change her clothes, he grandfather grabbed and pushed her onto the bed before removing her pants.
He raped her and the grandmother returned while he was still in the act prompting her to make a report at Chakari police station. The girl was taken to Kadoma General Hospital for medical examination.
Insp Mabgweazara urged parents and guardians to ensure that children use separate rooms from grown-ups to curb potential abuse.
“Parents should ensure that adolescents use separate rooms with grown-ups because it leaves them vulnerable to abuse,” he said.
