A CHITUNGWIZA man died recently after being crushed by a granite stone at his employer’s premises in Msasa.
Chaviringa Chapata (54), who worked as a supervisor at Home Improvement, met his fate when the 450kg boulder crushed him in a freak accident.
Chapata and four colleagues are said to have been offloading the stones when one of them slipped from a tray and crushed him.
Mrs Abigail Jera, the deceased’s first wife said her husband had worked for more than 18 years at the company.
Chapata’s brother, Mr Nyangu Kamwanza said: “I am very saddened by the death of my brother and how the company handled the matter.
“My brother had three wives and was a hardworking man who loved his family. We wonder how we are going to cope with life considering he has left some young kids.”
Officials from the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) have visited the company to access the safety of its operations and are yet to give feedback.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed this incident.
“Chaviringa Chapata of Chitungwiza was crushed by a granite stone at Home Improvement Company in Msasa, Harare. Police are investigating this matter,” he said.
Company director Mr Alan Agiotis said workers were offloading the stones and some staff members lost control resulting in one stone slipping and crushing Mr Chapata.
