Gogo Beaulah Chikava, a 73-year-old Harare senior citizen, was handed keys to a six-roomed furnished house in Budiriro by National Housing and Social Amenities Minister Daniel Garwe yesterday.
The house, worth US$30 000, was built by United Family International Church’s (UFIC) humanitarian arm, Agape Family Care (AFC), headed by Dr Ruth Makandiwa.
AFC also paid for the reconnection of electricity to the home, which had been cut off a decade ago, cleared water arrears accumulated for years and sank a borehole.
Gogo Chikava bought the stand on which the house was built 20 years ago using her late husband’s pension payout, but only managed to erect two rooms without floors and windows.
She had been staying under those conditions since then and developed asthma owing to dust which accumulated in the rooms.
This was discovered after she visited a doctor who told her that the asthma was caused by the dust accumulated in her chest.
Minister Garwe said the gesture by Dr Makandiwa was in sync with President Mnangagwa’s vision for people to own houses.
The President’s vision is to ensure that people own houses so Dr Makandiwa is also participating in facilitating Vision 2030.
“We cannot go anywhere without people like Dr Makandiwa in the society. As a country, we are inviting all businesspeople, church leaders and organisations and other stakeholders to collaborate and build houses. During my tenure I will work with UFIC to build houses for their church members as they have shown their determination in this area.”
Minister Garwe called for unity in the country to ensure the success of economic renaissance in the country.
Gogo Chikava, who was shedding tears of joy, thanked Dr Makandiwa for her kind gesture.
UFIC senior pastor Prime Kufa pledged to continue supporting to the vulnerable in times of need.
