Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Permanent Secretary Dr John Basera has said notable strides have been achieved in the fight against January Disease which has accounted for over half a million cattle losses in the past five years but there is a need for extra vigilance.
Dr Basera on Wednesday said in 2021 and 2022, cattle deaths from January Disease also known as Theileriosis, were reduced by 47 percent and 39 percent respectively.
While acknowledging the reduction in deaths, he appealed for extra vigilance among farmers and emphasized the importance of adhering to dipping regimes.
While tick-borne diseases killed at least 500 000 cattle in the past five years, deaths from tick-borne diseases are now falling fast after several strategies launched by the Government are taking effect and farmers are following the advice of veterinary experts.
In January, the Government declared a national war against January disease following an upsurge in cases and deaths of livestock across the country.
Cattle remain an integral part of local agriculture with 75 percent of communal farmers relying on them for draught power.
Zimbabwe is eyeing a six million herd of cattle by the end of this year and one of eight million by 2025.
