THE organisers of the Great Zimbabwe Marathon have predicted a bigger and better event as they host the fifth edition of the race, pencilled for October 19 in Masvingo.
Participants will compete in the 42.2km, 25km and 10km categories, all World Athletics-certified, making the event a qualifying race for international marathons such as the Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans Marathon.
In celebration of the 5th anniversary, this year alone there will be a 5km anniversary lap that accommodates everyone from beginners to seasoned runners.
The founding organiser of the Great Zimbabwe Marathon, Loreen Chari, said preparations are progressing smoothly, and registration closes tomorrow.
“The Great Zimbabwe Marathon has become more than just a race. It’s a celebration of who we are as Zimbabweans.
“We are thrilled to see such enthusiasm from athletes, sponsors and the community. This year promises to be our most memorable edition yet.
“Registrations are still coming through although the deadline is now fast approaching. Race registration closes on the 10th of October.
“We are expecting over 600 runners to participate in this year’s edition,” said Chari.
Blanket Mine Running Club athletes dominated the previous edition, with Lucky Munsaka winning the 42km race in the men’s category, and Yvert Sibanda was the only woman to come through before cut-off time.
In the 25km category, Mthokozisi Sibanda came first and Lilian Chivasa walked away with the women’s title.
Andrew Ndlovu won the 10km men’s race. Sheron Masukwedza was the first to cross the finish line in the women’s event.
The Great Zimbabwe Marathon is hosted by Eastview Elites Running Club under the guidance of Lutah Creative Solutions (Pvt) Ltd.
“In addition to promoting fitness and tourism, the Great Zimbabwe Marathon also gives back to the community with proceeds supporting the Copota School of the Blind.
“The marathon also supports preservation of heritage sites.
“With the perfect mix of endurance, entertainment, and cultural flair, the Great Zimbabwe Marathon 2025 promises to be an unforgettable experience.
“The event continues to enjoy strong corporate backing. Tanganda Tea Company, the marathon’s official hydration partner, will once again be providing all the required water along the route, as such, runners shouldn’t fear the heat as they will be sufficiently hydrated.
“Other loyal partners who have consistently supported the event include Great Zimbabwe Hotel, Lodge at the Ancient City, Econet Wireless, Econet Life, Zonful Energy, Deposit Protection Corporation, Jadeyed, and CABS.”
Pre-event activities will kick off a day before the main event with aerobics sessions among other activities on the programme.
