A tribute ceremony was held at Dingumuzi Stadium in Plumtree today, where family, fans, and friends gathered to honour the late football legend Grey Ncube.
“Today, we’re gathering to honour my uncle, Grey Ncube, a football legend who played for Black Horrors and brought recognition to Plumtree football,” said Alfred Tshuma, cousin and family spokesperson. “We’re hosting a match between Plumtree Legends FC and Plumtree Social Soccer Club as a memorial,” he added.
Grey Ncube, a renowned football figure, died on 3 March 2025 at the age of 73, following a prolonged battle with cancer. He was buried at Magatroidy Cemetery (known as Madubes) in Plumtree on 8 March 2025.
Omar Ncube, Grey’s granddaughter, said, *”Grandpa introduced me to football, and we would watch matches together. I am now a regular football fan, and it’s fitting that we are here today to celebrate his legacy.”

Before the match, Paul Ndebele, a technical member of Mainline FC, introduced Mrs Kate Mantula Ncube, the widow of football legend Grey Ncube, to the players of both teams.
The match began with a poignant minute’s silence in tribute to the late Grey Ncube before the referee’s whistle signalled kick-off.
The memorial match drew a large crowd, including Grey’s grandchildren, friends, Mainline FC staff, PSSC members, and numerous Plumtree football fans. In the end, Plumtree Legends FC lost 2-0 to PSSC.
