A novel solar project that will see homeowners being offered the chance to have their roofs fitted with solar panels, from which they will be paid rental fees, will soon be unveiled.
Under the initiative, Prevail Group Internation (PGI) will be the project implementer under the Zimbabwe Solar Energy Company (ZISEC).
The investors will foot the bill for providing and installing solar panels, with the power generated fed into the national grid.
In an interview on Wednesday, PGI chairperson, Mr Paul Tungwarara said the project will help to significantly reduce load shedding.
He revealed that a pilot project for the initiative, targeting more than 600 houses, will be unveiled in Glen View next month. “We are hoping to launch this project on April 1, and we believe it will transform the electricity situation in the country.”
Use of existing houses, he said, will allow the company to avoid wasting land.
“Land is a finite resource and with this project, we are saying that we understand that land is running out. This is a win-win situation because we will be paying rent to all the owners of houses, where we will install the solar panels. Our plan is to then sell the power to ZESA,” said Mr Tungwarara.
He revealed that the project has been implemented in other countries like the United Kingdom and Mauritius.
Mr Tungwara’s company, PGI is currently implementing the Presidential Boreholes Scheme that has seen thousands of boreholes being constructed around the country to address water shortages in both rural and urban areas
