BEYOND the Borders Dance Battles, a dynamic dance competition set to unite some of the most talented performers from Zimbabwe and Zambia, is scheduled to take place in Bulawayo’s city centre on November 1.
This inaugural event has been made possible through the collaborative efforts of creatives Melani Mkhize (known as Melani), Manubukosi Prince Masinge (popularly known as Uncle Stunna), and Nicholas, a dancer and graphic designer from Lusaka, Zambia.
Mkhize shared that the inspiration for the event stemmed from witnessing the immense, yet often underappreciated, talent within local communities.
“We’ve seen dancers with incredible skill who only perform for small, fragmented audiences. We wanted to create a central, high-energy event that not only crowns a winner, but also brings everyone together under one roof,” said Mkhize.
He said the main objective is to strengthen the local dance ecosystem, encourage collaboration, and showcase the vibrancy of the region’s dance culture.
“We were inspired by our own journeys as dancers. This platform is not just about competition — it’s about unity, growth, and creating opportunities. We hope it will serve as a launchpad for larger initiatives that offer dancers regional recognition and access to funding.”
Unlike many dance contests, Beyond the Borders Dance Battles will welcome participants of all skill levels, with no rigid selection criteria. Dancers will compete across three categories: Open Style, where any genre of music may be used; Amapiano; and Hip-Hop.
Adding to the excitement, the top winners in each category will receive all the registration fees collected from their respective category, along with a surprise cash prize.
Although the organisers are still seeking sponsors, the event has already secured support from local brands such as Street Kredit, Finn Juice, and Zambia’s Force Flava.
Members of the public can also contribute by purchasing tickets and engaging with the event’s social media platforms through follows, shares, and interactions.
