Hunt For Greatness
Milton Kamwendo
GROWTH is intentional.
Greatness is not accidental.
A catalyst for personal and professional growth is thinking — not just reacting, not just absorbing, but thinking deeply, deliberately and strategically.
Napoleon Hill, in his classic “Think and Grow Rich”, said: “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”
That is a call to intentional thought, a call to think and, by thinking, to grow greatness.
In “Thinking for a Change”, John C. Maxwell states that people who go to the top think differently than others.
The key to changing your life is to change the way you think.
You are where you are because of your thinking.
You can also change your direction of travel by changing your thinking.
The challenge then is not whether you have the capacity to grow; it is whether you have the discipline to think.
Thinking gap
Most people do not think.
They worry. They react. They follow. They repeat.
Few set aside time to think.
Thinking is not the same as worrying or over-analysing.
It is purposeful reflection with the intent to understand, learn and grow.
As Hill noted, riches do not respond to wishes; they respond to definite plans backed by definite thoughts.
The thinking gap separates those who drift along through life from those who pursue greatness.
To grow you must think your way forward.
Thinking allows you to mine your past for lessons.
You evaluate your present with clarity and shape your future with vision.
Thinking discipline
Intentional thinking is a learned discipline.
In a world dominated by distractions and noise, creating time and space to think is countercultural.
Without it, you cannot grow.
Maxwell outlines several kinds of thinking in “Thinking for a Change”, which include:
Big-picture thinking — seeing beyond the moment
Focused thinking — removing clutter to concentrate deeply
Creative thinking — challenging assumptions and imagining new possibilities
Strategic thinking — connecting the dots and planning with clarity
Reflective thinking — learning from experience
Each of these thinking disciplines is a tool.
The more tools you master, the more gears you have to navigate complexities, solve problems and seize opportunities.
Your thinking capacity determines your growing capacity.
Thinking proportion
The Bible says: “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7)
You are the sum of your thoughts.
You are where you are today largely because of how you have thought up until now.
If you want your life to change, your thinking must change first.
Hill’s foundational premise in “Think and Grow Rich” is that success begins in the mind.
The dominant thoughts you entertain eventually form your actions, your habits and your results.
You do not need more resources: You need better thoughts.
Your future is already in your head; it’s just waiting for you to think it into action.
Thinking lifestyle
Imagine if you spent 30 minutes every day just thinking — no phone, no meetings and no distractions: Just thinking.
- What could I do better?
- What is working and what is not?
- What would my ideal future look like?
- How do I grow from this setback?
- What bold idea is waiting to be acted on?
The simple habit of thinking, practised daily, leads you to extraordinary breakthroughs.
Think deeply and courageously about the problems you want to solve.
Growth is the product of ideas that are acted upon.
Ideas only come from reflection, curiosity and critical thinking.
When you think consistently, you grow continuously.
Thinking action
Action without thought is misguided.
Thinking without action is fantasy.
Think, harvest the thoughts and then act on your thinking.
Thoughts are seeds: It is when they are planted in action that they bear fruit.
Every breakthrough begins as a thought.
There is power in every single thought.
Give yourself the permission to think differently.
Take your thinking seriously.
Treat your thoughts as treasure.
Write them down. Review them. Share them with trusted mentors. Convert them into plans. Execute those plans with urgency. When the thoughts fail, do not despair.
Reflect again, grow stronger and think bigger.
Thinking growth
Here are practical steps to make thinking a tool for your growth:
- Schedule thinking time
Set aside at least 30-60 minutes weekly just for thinking. Make it a discipline, not a luxury. Choose a quiet place, bring a notebook and start with thought prompt, like a question, challenge or message.
- Ask better questions
Your life improves with the quality of your questions.
Instead of asking “Why me?” ask “What does this teach me?”
Instead of “What if I fail?” ask “What will I miss if I don’t try?”
- Capture ideas quickly
Keep a journal or notes app to record insights, ideas and questions as they arise. The mind is a river. Capture and dam the water, or else it just flows away.
- Reflect regularly
Reflection is thinking with hindsight. At the end of the week or day, reflect: What went well? What did I learn? Where do I need to improve?
- Surround yourself with thinkers
Growth is contagious. Join masterminds, book clubs or peer groups where thinking and growth are celebrated.
- Read and stimulate your mind
Reading is thinking borrowed. The best minds leave behind a trail of ideas in books. Use them. Read widely. Let good thinking stretch your own.
Thinking legacy
In the long run, you will not be remembered for what you thought and how those thoughts shaped others.
Great leaders are remembered for their philosophy and the mental frameworks they leave behind. That is your thinking legacy.
You do not need to be the loudest, the fastest or the richest.
As a thinker, your influence grows steadily over time. Thinking plants seeds that multiply for generations.
You grow when you think; you stagnate when you do not.
So, pause, reflect, dream and strategise.
Think with intention and boldness.
Your next level of growth, breakthrough and influence will not be stumbled upon.
It will be thought into existence.
Hill said: “More gold has been mined from the thoughts of men than has ever been taken from the earth.”
Start mining your thinking to grow your greatness.
Committed to your greatness.
