while “Mrs Midzi” and the gunman called in reinforcements from Mbare.
After a few minutes, four commuter omnibuses arrived at the scene and the occupants encircled the municipal officers whereupon two shots were allegedly fired at Sergeant Never Masiya.
Sgt Masiya, who is a war veteran, scurried for cover.
Sources said when the gunman shouted “attack”, the reinforcements descended on the hapless municipal officers, beating them up.
The attackers looted cash, wristwatches and cellphones, including items that had been confiscated from illegal vendors.
Tools used to demolish the car sales were also seized.
Hammers were reportedly used to shatter windows of municipal vehicles.
“Our officers sustained head injuries and fractured limbs,” said an officer who refused to be named.
The injured officers were paraded at the municipal police headquarters yesterday.
Council spokesperson Mr Leslie Gwindi confirmed the incident.
“We have made a police report. The matter was first reported at Rhodesville Police Station. We understand the matter has been transferred to Harare Central Police Station,” he said.
Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister Dr Ignatius Chombo supports council’s clampdown on illegal car sales.
Minister Chombo dismissed as ill-founded claims by the Zanu-PF Harare provincial youth league that council was thwarting indigenisation.
“Does indigenisation say build on wrong places?” he asked.
Council started pulling down illegal car sales a few weeks ago.
