Gunmen free 175 inmates

AKURE (Nigeria) — Unidentified armed men stormed the Olokuta Medium Security Prison in Nigerian region of Akure in the early hours, helping escape a total of 175 prisoners from the facility. Confirming the jailbreak, state controller of prisons Tunde Olayiwola said that this was one of the rarest of the rare incidents. During the breakout, one prison official was injured and had been sent to a government-run health facility in the southwest Nigeria’s Ondo state.

Briefing reporters after the incident, Olayiwola assured to bring perpetrators of this attack to justice, adding that the authorities right now have no information about suspects.

However, he brushed off rumours of involvement of Boko Haram, a militant sect, which has its base in northeastern Nigerian region, in the attack. Gunmen apparently blew off the wall of prison that led to the inmates’ cell to gain entry into the facility.
The police have begun the investigation in the attack. – zeibiz.com.
