Gunmen rob miner of cash and cellphones

THREE armed robbers pounced on a home in Emganwini suburb, Bulawayo and got away with thousands of dollars in cash and several cellphones after threatening the occupant at gunpoint.

Deputy Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu, confirmed the incident which occurred in the early hours of July 28.

“At around 3AM, three unknown male adults, armed with two pistols, jumped over a durawall, cut the burglar bars on a window using an unknown object and gained entry into the complainant’s house,” said Assistant Inspector Ndlovu.

The 39-year-old man, was asleep when the suspects broke in.

They allegedly woke him up, threatened to shoot him, and demanded cash, claiming they knew he was involved in mining activities.

Fearing for his life, the complainant surrendered a brown leather bag that was hidden in his wardrobe.

The suspects took US$3 720, ZAR1 000 and five cellphones, before fleeing the scene on foot in an unknown direction.

Police have since launched investigations and are appealing to the public for assistance.

“Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects is urged to report to the nearest police station,” said Assistant Inspector Ndlovu.

She also urged members of the public to avoid keeping large sums of money in their homes.
