FOR ages, vulnerable people and communities have suffered and, in some cases, died in silence for fear of the unknown.
Some easily give in and surrender when the pressures of life take their toll. For the brave, however, breaking the culture of silence can offer a path towards healing and reclaiming their voices.
This could be the case with Daves Guzha’s upcoming play, Defiance, which began on Wednesday and ends tonight at Theatre in the Park, Harare Gardens.
The production boasts a star-studded cast featuring Tendai “Tendex” Madzviti, Tanatswa Bliss Madhidhi, Priscilla Mutendera and Privillage Mutendera.
According to the synopsis, Defiance centres on a family under siege, battered by waves of challenges that leave it shaken and teetering on the brink of collapse.
Having enjoyed a middle-class life, everything appears to be going well until a devastating incident changes the family’s fortunes.
Each member is struck by misfortune, forcing them to carry the burden of rejection and trauma until they finally refuse to remain silent about their experiences.
Speaking out as a family becomes an act of defiance against a culture of suffering in silence. Through emotional conversations, the family takes audiences on a journey through the traumas confronting modern families in Zimbabwe.
The play explores the emotional wounds unleashed by a crisis of expectations and the consequences of keeping painful experiences hidden.
Its message is particularly relevant at a time when many families struggle to openly discuss difficult issues when misfortune strikes.
Guzha has assembled a diverse and experienced cast, including veteran actress Privillage Mutendera.
Mutendera needs little introduction. She has featured in the one-woman play Mrs Mupasa and has also appeared in Rooftop Productions’ Election Day.
As a writer, she has worked on productions including What Makes a Woman, I Do/Do I, The Manual and Ebony & Ivory, which have been performed at the SADC Women’s Festival and the Olive Tree Festival in South Africa.
She has also performed at the August Strindberg Festival in Sweden in the play The Comrades.
A three-time NAMA nominee for Best Actress, Mutendera has also ventured into film writing, where she has won three awards at the Zimbabwe International Film Festival for Best Short Films.
Tendai “Tendex” Madzviti joins the production with an impressive background as both an actor and singer.
His professional career began at the Zimbabwe College of Music, where he obtained a degree in Ethnomusicology.
Among his best-known acting roles is Rafiki in The Lion King at Reps Theatre.
He has also played leading roles in Nakai Tsuro’s films, including Sonia My Wife, Chipini and I Prayed.
Madzviti has also appeared in the play Juju Soccer at Theatre in the Park.
In Defiance, he takes on the role of Simba.
Beyond acting, Madzviti is an accomplished singer who performs with his band internationally. He has also worked with artistes such as Ammara Brown and Baba Harare as a lead backing vocalist and dance choreographer.
Also joining the cast is prolific actor and screenwriter Tanatswa Madhidhi, whose journey in film and television has largely been self-taught and driven by a passion for storytelling.
He made his small-screen debut in 2022 after landing a role in the DStv series Sofelani. In 2023, he appeared in another DStv production, Jangano, in a supporting role.
With acting opportunities limited, Madhidhi turned his attention to screenwriting and storytelling. He wrote his first short film, produced by Welensky Kaseke, in which he also appeared as a supporting actor.
The film went on to win a ZAFTA Award for Best Sound Design and received a nomination at the European Festival Awards for Best Narrative.
In 2026, Madhidhi’s acting career gained significant momentum. He landed his first major television role as part of the main cast of a ZBC series, followed by a supporting role in the ZBC production Bvuri.
He was also cast in his first feature film, Becoming Madam Boss, marking another major milestone in his career.
He appeared in Kusvika Ndafa and was also cast by Nakai Tsuro in Chishamiso, a production that brought him wider recognition on social media and introduced his work to a growing online audience.
Beyond acting, 2026 has also been a defining year for Madhidhi as a writer and creator. He created and wrote the television series Kusvika Ndafa, in which he also plays a leading role. The series was subsequently acquired by Tese
