GWANDA and Lupane Districts are set for intense heat waves this weekend, with temperatures reaching 37 degrees Celsius, making them the cities with the highest recorded temperatures during this period.
In a statement, The Meteorological Services Department (MET) said Gweru is expected to reach a high temperature of 32°C, Bulawayo, Kwekwe, Chinhoyi, Bindura 33°C, Kadoma, Masvingo 34°C, tomorrow.
“Hot and sunny conditions are expected to persist countrywide with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius in low lying areas such as the Zambezi, Save.
“Limpopo and Gwai valleys. It is therefore encouraged that people and animals stay hydrated in well ventilated spaces to avoid heat stress.
The MET advised citizens to ensure continuous hydration for their well-being.
“The dry and windy conditions increase the risk of veld fires.
“Fluctuations in temperatures can pose health hazards.
“The prevailing sunny weather in the Northern areas enhances evapotranspiration. Hot day-time conditions in the Northern parts of the country may result in dehydration and heat- related illnesses such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and heat rash.
“Southern areas will be cold therefore vulnerable members of the society should stay warm,” reads the statement.
