GWANDA District has identified Mawaza Village in Ward 11 as the first area to benefit under the Presidential Rural Solarisation Programme.
The Presidential Solarisation Project aims to equip every rural household with a solar system, in line with the Second Republic’s Rural Development 8.0 strategy. The project is part of a broader initiative to uplift rural livelihoods, enhance agricultural productivity, and boost food security.
Speaking during a meeting attended by heads of government departments, Gwanda District Development Coordinator Ms Nomathemba Ndlovu said a team would assess the area to identify 10 homesteads that meet the set criteria for the programme’s launch.
A total of 21,428 households in Gwanda are set to benefit from the initiative.
“As a district, we have been tasked with selecting a village where the solar system will be installed for the launch of the programme. In that village, we must identify 10 homesteads that meet the set criteria to benefit first. A team will conduct an on-the-ground assessment to identify suitable homesteads. We must work timeously to meet the deadline,” she said.
The project seeks to promote rural industrialisation by expanding solar-powered infrastructure. Key benefits of the Presidential Solarisation Project include piped water systems, nutrition gardens, livestock watering, and household electricity for domestic use.
Each rural household will be equipped with a solar system capable of powering electrical appliances. Additionally, solar-powered water systems will use submersible pumps to enhance agricultural productivity and food security. These systems will be installed in remote locations that do not require extensive grid infrastructure.
