Gwanda gets $300k for roads rehab

GWANDA Municipality has been allocated $300,000 by the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara) for the rehabilitation of the town’s roads. The money was released after the local authority was able to account for $253,000 that was allocated to it last year for road rehabilitation works. Last year’s funds were used to rehabilitate 7,7 kilometres of Gwanda’s road network as well as to install two sets of traffic lights.

Gwanda mayor Councillor Knowledge Ndlovu said work was already in progress following the release of the latest tranche of funds. “We’ve embarked on the rehabilitation of the major roads especially the Phakama- Phelandaba Stadium road,” said Clr Ndlovu.

The other roads to be upgraded are in Phakama suburb as well as the one leading to Phelandaba Stadium.

Recently, the government commended the local authority for accounting for roads funds allocated to it.

During a recent visit to Gwanda, the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Joram Gumbo said Zinara should continue supporting such local authorities.

Apart from the Zinara funds, council has revealed that it will inject $200,000 from its own coffers towards road rehabilitation.

Zinara was established in terms of the Road Act in 2002 with a mandate to enhance the country’s road network.

Its core business is to fix road user charges and collect any other revenue that includes toll fees.
