Gwanda murder suspect in court

for warning him to stop caressing his daughter, yesterday appeared in court facing murder charges.

Forward Maphala (28), of Sukwi area under Chief Marupi in Gwanda District appeared before Gwanda magistrate Ms Sheila Nazombe to answer charges of allegedly murdering Mr Sarayi Ndlovu (38), of Thibeli Village under Chief Marupi. He was not asked to plead but was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

He was remanded in custody to 21 January.

The State alleges that on 1 January this year at about 11pm, Mr Ndlovu went to Thibeli business centre to look for his children who had taken too long to return home. When Mr Ndlovu arrived at the business centre, he saw his daughter Siyeyisiwe Moyo (18) being caressed by Maphala.

Mr Ndlovu then warned Maphala against his unbecoming behaviour and Maphala pretended to apologise while drawing closer to Mr Ndlovu and allegedly produced an Okapi knife with which he stabbed Mr Ndlovu once on the right side of his neck.

Mr Ndlovu bled profusely and died on the spot while Maphala ran away from the scene, but was later arrested. He is said to have been in the police wanted list for other offences.

Mr Khumbulani Nyoni is representing the State.
