GWANDA District has resuscitated the District Civil Protection and Planning Committee which has not been active for about a year.
The development was necessitated by the destruction caused by heavy rains which fell during the festive season that have destroyed eight dams.
Yesterday, the DCPPC set up teams to deal with floods, veld fires, spillage of toxic substances, outbreak of diseases among other disasters.
Addressing committee members, acting Gwanda District Administrator, Mr Judge Dube said they were geared for any disaster in the district.
“The chairperson of the Committee who is the DA has to give reports to the Civil Protection Division on all disasters. It was important to resuscitate the committees up to ward and village levels so that people know who to call in the event of a disaster,” said Mr Dube.
Gwanda Rural District Council chief executive officer, Mr Ronny Sibanda, who is also a committee member, said members should work hard in times of disasters.
An eight-hour storm left a trail of destruction in rural Gwanda destroying dams, bridges, roads and also killed livestock last month.
