THE 2013 Gwanda Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund has set a target of $5 000 to ensure disadvantaged members of the society also have a memorable festive season.
Officially launching the Cheer Fund on Friday in the council chambers, the Mayor, Councillor Knowledge Ndlovu, said with the festive season fast approaching, there was a need for the members of the community to see to it that the joy brought about by the season could also be shared with the less privileged.
“All of us deserve the joy that comes with this season, be it you are on the hospital bed, in prison, homeless, poor and or bereaved.
“I am talking about our friends and relatives who are at the bottom-most of the social and economic structure of our society, who exist in this gold town of Gwanda,” said Clr Ndlovu.
Pledges totalling about $1 200 were made at the launch together with pledges of groceries and clothing.
Clr Ndlovu appealed to members of the Gwanda community to extend a hand and take part by donating freely towards the noble cause.
He said people should not undermine their donations, saying no matter how small it was, it would add value to the less-priviledged’s joy.
“I am appealing for donations in cash or kind. Remember $1 can afford one family, rich or poor a decent breakfast,” he said.
The Cheer Fund committee has lined up a number of funding-raising activities such as soccer matches.
