national hero and politician Cde Eric Nyakudya Gwanzura who died on Monday has been described as a loving father and revolutionary leader who dedicated most of his time to liberating the people of Zimbabwe.
Speaking from Mabelreign where mourners are gathered, Senate president Edna Madzongwe said Cde Gwanzura would be remembered for his love for the family and the nation.
“He never got tired to work for the nation, even when they jailed him, it did not deter his love to continue working for the liberation of the majority of Zimbabweans upon his release,” said Cde Madzongwe, who is Cde Gwanzura’s sister.
Cde Gwanzura’s younger brother Cleopas said he would always be remembered for his fatherly role to the family.
“He was like a father to us, a true leader with so much love, not only to his siblings, but even to the extended family,” he said.
Mr Gwanzura said his brother helped many people in the family, especially those who could not afford to pay school fees to access education.
Cde Gwanzura’s eldest daughter, Tryphine Vambe, described her father as approachable and loving.
“He was very approachable, a father you would engage in a conversation without any reservation,” she said.
“When he was in detention, he would send us money back home to continue surviving to show that he really was a father.”
Cde Gwanzura collapsed and died on Sunday at his home in Chegutu.
He is survived by wife Evelyne, 16 children, 65 grandchildren and 18 great-grand children.
He will be buried at the National Heroes Acre on Sunday.
