Gwebi River Bridge, 10km stretch opened to traffic

Another bridge along Gwebi River and a 10km stretch on the Harare-Bindura Road were opened to traffic this afternoon.

Cabinet Ministers led by Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona and his deputy Joshua Sacco toured the road and the bridge before opening it to traffic.

Others present were the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Engineer Joy Makumbe, Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Charles Tawengwa, Mashonaland Central Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Christopher Magomo, chairman of the

Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructure Development, Cde Knowledge Kaitano, Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) board chairperson, Dr George Manyaya, and Zinara chief executive officer, Mr Nkosinathi Ncube.

Addressing the officials, Minister Mhona paid tribute to the work ethic of the Second Republic under the leadership of President Mnangagwa, which has seen the whole-of-Government approach doing wonders in national development.

“We are standing here today celebrating as a ministry, showcasing what we have done through the leadership of His Excellency, Comrade Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.

“The President has said let’s mobilise resources locally so that we rehabilitate our infrastructure.

“And that’s why we are witnessing this kind of development.

“When we started at the beginning of the year with ground breaking ceremonies, others believed in our vision, while others, as usual, were doubting us.

“Today we stand tall as we have achieved so much. This kind of work ethic must continue.

He said the life span of the completed road is 20 years.

The minister also bemoaned the increase in road fatalities on some of the modernised roads and implored the motoring public to be cautious and obey road traffic regulations.

Last month, another Gwebi River Bridge and a 4km stretch along the Old Mazowe Road were opened to traffic after Government completed construction.

About 26km of access roads linking the New Parliament Building and surrounding areas are almost complete.
