Gweru City Council has released $3,5 million towards the second phase of the rehabilitation of the city’s roads.
The local authority is aiming to resurface at least two link roads in every ward. In an interview last week, Gweru Mayor Councillor Josiah Makombe said the contractor was already on the ground resurfacing the roads and the project was expected to be complete within the next three months.
“We have released $3,5 million towards the second phase of roads rehabilitation. We intended to have an official launch of this project but the contractor is already on the ground, so we are no longer going to have an official launch.
“We have started with Mkoba high-density suburb where the road network is in very bad shape.
“We intended to go to every suburb in Gweru and attend to all the roads that link with the highway,” he said.
Cllrr Makombe said the funds were enough to resurface up to 40km of road.
“According to the available budgets, we can re-do up to 40km. We will see how we will progress but our aim as the local authority is to make sure that we rehabilitate all our roads.
“The extent of damage has been extreme so we need to work on repairing our roads. Every ward should have one or two roads resurfaced,” he said.
Meanwhile, Cllr Makombe said council has acquired two new refuse trucks as it seeks to improve on service delivery.
The local authority has been relying on hiring private trucks for garbage collection with the council refuse collection fleet grounded.
“We have since purchased two refuse compactors from Croco Motors and we expect delivery early next week. This will help us improve on service delivery, especially refuse collection which has been a major challenge,” he said.
