GWERU City Council (GCC) has started distributing food hampers and paying school fees for vulnerable children using funds raised under the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund, which mobilised more than US$37 000 and ZWG62 000.

Through the fund, GCC supports underprivileged learners from primary school up to university level, while also providing food assistance to at least 300 families and elderly residents in old people’s homes across the city.

On Friday, about 250 food hampers were distributed to needy beneficiaries during a handover ceremony held at Town House.

Addressing beneficiaries and residents, Gweru mayor, Councillor Martin Chivhoko, commended residents and business people for their generosity, saying the initiative demonstrated the city’s collective commitment to social welfare.

“I stand before you today with immense gratitude and joy to thank all those who supported our fundraising efforts. Through the Charity Dinner and Mayor’s Charity Burnouts, we managed to raise US$37 450 and ZWG62 600,” said Clr Chivhoko.

He said the achievement reflected the community’s compassion and willingness to uplift the vulnerable.
“Today, we are distributing 275 food hampers to individuals and eight institutions. These hampers are a small token of appreciation for the resilience shown by our people despite the challenges they face,” he said.

Clr Chivhoko said beyond food aid, the bulk of the funds would be channelled towards education support, ensuring that deserving but disadvantaged learners remain in school.

“We will continue providing school fees assistance to underprivileged students so that they can pursue their dreams and build a brighter future for themselves and their families,” he said.

The mayor assured residents that the funds would be used transparently and responsibly.
“Giving is not just about donating money; it is about investing in the future of our community and empowering families and institutions to thrive,” he said.

The event also witnessed a highlight moment when 2025 Premier Soccer League Soccer Star of the Year, Washington Navaya, received a 1 000-square-metre residential stand in Hertfordshire suburb, courtesy of businesswoman and philanthropist Ambassador Dr Smelly Dube.

The agreement of sale was handed over during the ceremony.
Dr Dube said the gesture was meant to recognise Navaya’s achievements and his role in putting Gweru on the national football map.

“As River Valley Properties, we are proud to hand over this stand in Hertfordshire Phase 2 to a footballer who has raised the city’s profile through his talent and discipline,” she said.

Dr Dube, who was the guest of honour, has also been distributing grocery hampers and cash vouchers to vulnerable families across Gweru during the festive season.

In his acceptance speech, Navaya expressed gratitude and called for continued recognition of sports excellence.
“I am humbled by this gesture. I thank Dr Dube for recognising my achievements and I encourage her to continue honouring sportspeople who excel. This should not end with me,” he said.

Clr Chivhoko also commended Dr Dube for her generosity and consistent support of the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund, saying partnerships between local authorities and the private sector were key to sustainable community development.
