Gweru donates to Cyclone Idai

GWERU City Council has donated $15 000 and availed earth moving equipment for the reconstruction of roads in Cyclone Idai affected areas in Chimanimani.

In an interview, Gweru City mayor Councillor Josiah Makombe confirmed the development saying they managed to donate money to be used in the purchasing of fuel for the earth moving equipment to be used in the reconstruction of roads.

“As the Gweru City Council we have donated $15 000 and availed earth moving equipment towards the reconstruction of roads which were destroyed in Chimanimani by Cyclone Idai,” he said.

“We managed to avail earth moving equipment such as bulldozers, caterpillars, water bowsers and vibrators for the reconstruction of roads in Chimanimani.

We also managed to second our engineers to operate the equipment.”

Clr Makombe said he was in Chipinge recently where he handed over the earth moving equipment and the operators.

“I was in Chipinge handing over the earth moving equipment and the operators are now on the ground,” he said.

Clr Makombe said as the president of Urban Councils’ Association of Zimbabwe (UCAZ), he sat down with the fellow members whom he said were in the process of donating earth moving equipment and personnel towards the worthy cause.

“As UCAZ we are responding to the call by the Government to assist in the reconstruction of the road network so movement is not restricted,” he said.

“So, we sat down with UCAZ members and decided that each local authority must provide earth moving machinery.”

Meanwhile, people in the Midlands province continue to donate cash and kind to victims of Cyclone Idai.

Midlands Provincial Affairs Minister Larry Mavima said they were nearing the million dollar mark in terms of donations.
