Gweru City Council has rehabilitated 38km in the central business district and some major public roads at a cost of $2,8 million. Speaking during a Service Level Benchmarking Tour, Gweru City Council Roads Engineer Beauty Chimedza said they had so far managed to rehabilitate public roads and those linking critical institutions at a cost of $2,8 million.
“We have so far rehabilitated 38,5 km in the city,” she said.
“We resealed 23km, overlaid 8,8km and 6,2km were reconstructed.”
Eng Chimedza said the road rehabilitation project was funded by their allocation from Zimbabwe National Road Administration.
“The rehabilitation work is Zinara funded,” she said. “We were supposed to receive $4,2 million, but we have so far received $2,8 million.
“We reconstructed 2,8km along Chilimani Road, which is the major road in Mkoba linking village 13 to village 20. The road was heavily damaged and was no longer navigable by motorists.”
Eng Chimedza highlighted that the rehabilitated roads were a priority as identified by their roads condition survey.
“We rehabilitated Senga road through an overlay of 1,8km as it is a busy road linking the central business district with the Midlands State University,” she said.
Other roads rehabilitated were Ziyambi drive in Senga, Mkoba road, Nothlea road, Trafford road linking Fairmile hotel and the industrial area.
Eng Chimedza said more work needed to be done to resuscitate the road networks in the city.
“We still have a long way to go in terms of upgrading our roads because we have not started rehabilitating road signage. We have flighted a tender for the installation of road signs,” he said.
