The City of Gweru has introduced a voluntary self-meter reading programme aimed at improving billing accuracy and addressing persistent complaints from residents over inflated and estimated water charges.
Speaking during the ordinary council communication at a full council meeting on Monday, Mayor Councillor Martin Chivhoko said the initiative was introduced in response to concerns raised by residents regarding inaccurate water bills.
The programme will allow residents to submit their own water meter readings, which council will use to improve the accuracy of billing and reduce reliance on estimated readings.
“Residents are advised to record and submit their own meter readings by taking a clear photograph and sending it via WhatsApp to the numbers provided, including their phone number, account number and residential address.
“Readings must be submitted between the first and 12th of each month,” he said.
Cllr Chivhoko said self-meter reading is not mandatory but serves as a crucial alternative for residents who have previously disputed their bills or those whose properties are often inaccessible to council meter readers.
Cllr Chivhoko said it is meant to assist residents who doubt the accuracy of our readings or those whose gates are often locked during the council’s reading cycles.
