GWERU residents have expressed shock and anger following an incident in which a commuter omnibus driver allegedly sexually abused a seven-year-old boy he ferried to and from school.

The incident, which is said to have occurred on multiple occasions between March 12 and March 19, has sparked widespread anger and concern among parents and the community.

According to Midlands Provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, the victim’s mother discovered human waste on the boy’s pants on March 19 and, upon questioning, the child revealed that the driver had been sodomising him in the commuter omnibus.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police in Midlands province is investigating a case of aggravated indecent assault of a seven-year-old juvenile,” he said.
Insp Mahoko said the abuse is suspected to have happened on several occasions inside a commuter omnibus in transit from school to Mkoba during a period extending from March 12 to March 19.

“The suspect is a driver of a school – run commuter omnibus only known as ‘Jonso’ with no further particulars known,” he said.

“It is alleged, on March 19 the victim’s mother discovered some faeces on the victim’s pants while she was undressing him.”

Insp Mahoko said the mother interviewed her son who narrated that the commuter omnibus driver who ferries him to and from school had been sodomising him in the commuter omnibus whenever he takes him since March 12.

He urged parents to be vigilant and monitor their children’s movements, especially when using public transport.

“We are urging the general public to desist from entrusting strangers with their children as it endangers their lives. Due diligence needs to be taken in the planning of movements of children to and from school,” he said.

The police have since appealed for information on the whereabouts of the suspect, the driver of a commuter omnibus known as Jonso.

“If anyone has information about the whereabouts of the suspect, they are welcome to pass it to any police station,” he said.

The incident has sparked an outcry, with residents demanding justice for the victim, and calling for increased measures to protect children.
