A MAN from Gweru, Midlands Province, has been sentenced to eight months in prison for unlawful possession of marijuana.

Sipholicious Moyo (26) of Woodlands Phase 2 in Gweru, was convicted by the Gweru Magistrates’ Court.

“In the early hours of 25 September 2026, police officers received information that the offender was in possession of dagga at his residence in Woodlands Phase 2, Gweru.

“Officers proceeded to the premises, where they searched the offender’s room and recovered two plastic sachets containing dagga,” said the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) in a statement.

The offender failed to produce a valid licence or permit authorising him to possess the drug.

“The seized dagga was subsequently weighed at ZIMPOST Gweru and was found to weigh 0.066 kilograms.

“He was convicted of the charge and sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, with four months suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour, leaving an effective eight months in prison,” said NPAZ.

The dagga was forfeited to the State for destruction.

“NPAZ continues to work with law enforcement agencies to combat drug-related offences and bring offenders before the courts.

“The public is encouraged to report suspected drug-related activities to the relevant authorities as part of collective efforts to address drug abuse and illicit drug dealing,” reads the statement.
