Gweru Provincial Hospital needs urgent revamping of its infrastructure to match modern health service standards and cope with the increasing disease burden. The hospital’s medical superintendent Dr Fabian Mashingaidze told The Herald there was need to expand the hospital for it to cope with demand for its services.
“This hospital was built in 1937 and there has not been much improvement after that. Yes we have been trying to maintain the structures but some of it needs to be expanded to accommodate the requirements now so that we are able to cope with the increasing disease burden,” he said.
Dr Mashingaidze said the institution, which is the main referral hospital for the Midlands Province, needed more clinical laboratories.
“We need proper clinical laboratories which can offer most services like Histopathology services which are clinical services.
‘‘With the increasing number of specialists and more so surgical specialists we need more theatre space. That will be good as the institution is a referral hospital for the whole province,” he said.
Dr Mashingaidze said it was necessary to equip and revamp the hospital and enable it deal with changing disease patterns.
“The refurbishment and expansion of the institution will help us in dealing with changing disease patterns. It also means that we could be able to carry out more tests rather than relying on other institutions,” he said.
Last month Dr Mashingaidze said the institution was grappling with a shortage of nurses and support staff.
