Gweru Residents Association (GRA) has urged the newly elected councillors to focus on urgent challenges affecting the city as it continues to grapple with a typhoid outbreak that has affected thousands.

Speaking soon after the swearing in of mayor Councillor Josiah Makombe and other councillors, GRA chairperson Mr Cornelia Seliphiwe said the MDC-run council has a daunting task to improve service delivery in critical areas such as water provision and refuse collection, which will reduce the prevalence potential outbreak of diarrhoeal diseases.

“We expect the mayor and councillors to hit the ground running,” he said. “Currently, the city is faced with a typhoid outbreak which requires concerted efforts from all sectors so that it can be contained. We expect to work together with the council as it spearheads improvement of services such as water and refuse collection.”

Mr Seliphiwe said the council should engage with residents when crafting next year’s budget.
